Secure Data Communication and Efficient Team Working in the Automotive Sector with TRUexchange and TRUunity
LEONI is a global supplier of wires, cables and wiring systems. The group of companies, which is based in Germany, operates development centers, production facilities and sales offices in 30 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. LEONI employs more than 50,000 people and in 2008 achieved a sales turnover of more than 2.9 Billion EURO.
The principal customer base is the automotive industry, for which LEONI develops and makes technically sophisticated products. LEONI is already global market leader in the supply of automotive wires. In the field of wiring systems, the Group is number one in Europe and comes in fourth worldwide.
The Challenges
At their development centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme, United Kingdom, as well as at other global locations, LEONI Wiring Systems U.K. Ltd. develops, manufactures and distributes cable harnesses and complete wiring systems for the European automotive industry.
LEONI discussed two challenges with Trubiquity:
- How to achieve secure data communication with its customer base?
- How to optimize collaboration between geographically dispersed project team members?
LEONI sought a solution to replace its in-house basic File Transfer Protocol (FTP) solution for the exchange of engineering data needed to support customer requests for quotations and live design projects.
In addition, the new replacement solution had to satisfy strict customer requirements including:

In parallel, LEONI needed to connect geographically dispersed project team members at three locations: the development centre in Newcastle-under-Lyme, customer sites and a manufacturing site in Egypt. The goals were to improve team collaboration, increase design productivity and implement one central document store with appropriate control processes. Often, projects teams can rely too much on ad hoc email communications and get frustrated with the IT complexities associated with accessing internal business systems while working outside the company network.
Both can create data duplication, delays and inefficient working practices all of which LEONI was seeking to eliminate.
The Solution — TRUexchange and TRUunity
After reviewing the options available, LEONI chose international solution provider Trubiquity as its service partner. The solutions selected were:
- TRUexchange—the on demand/Software-as-a- Service (SaaS) solution for the exchange of very large and complex data packages containing multiple document types and associated meta data, including CAD, CAE, MS-Office and image files.
- TRUunity—the on demand/SaaS team collaboration solution for linking project team members across company boundaries, firewalls, disparate systems and multiple geographic locations.
"A decisive factor in selecting Trubiquity was its comprehensive product suite and considerable experience in the automotive industry. In fact, many of our major customers also use Trubiquity", states Mr. David Smith, IT Manager LEONI Wiring Systems U.K. Ltd.
The Results
Improved project and customer communication together with increased productivity
TRUexchange and TRUunity were deployed and made available to LEONI users in a few days. The intuitive nature of the products allowed LEONI project team members to start to use the solutions almost immediately, helping them greatly to increase team productivity.
Mr. Smith confirms that the solutions met LEONI’s and their customer expectations, "TRUexchange and TRUunity have helped LEONI to improve their internal and extended enterprise working practices. I was really impressed by Trubiquity’s ability to rapidly create and deploy the correct environment for LEONI and deliver working solutions ahead of schedule. That is what SaaS solutions combined with industry experience is all about."
